No Crap Diet

What Pro Athletes Actually Eat (The Boring Truth)

Across football, basketball, running and fighting, elite diets share five rules. Here they are, plus the plate template you can build from any kitchen.

The 10-second version

Pro athlete diets look different on the surface — different sports, different sizes, different cultures. Underneath they are almost identical: Protein at every meal. Real carbs around training. Real fats, not seed oils. Water all day. Almost nothing from a package. That is it. There is no secret supplement. The plate is the program.

The five rules they all share

1. Protein at every meal. Eggs, chicken, fish, beef, yogurt. Not once a day — every meal. 2. Carbs around training. Rice, potatoes, oats, fruit, real pasta — eaten before and after work, not grazed on all day as snacks. 3. Real fat. Olive oil, butter, ghee, avocado, nuts. Not soybean/canola blends from the fryer. 4. Water first. Most "low energy" is dehydration wearing a costume. 5. Repetition. Elite eaters eat the same 8–10 meals over and over. Variety is a restaurant idea, not a performance idea.

The plate template

Build every meal like this and you are 90% of the way there: - Half the plate: vegetables or fruit - A palm or two: protein - A fist: real carbs (rice, potato, oats, pasta) — bigger on training days - A thumb: real fat — olive oil, butter, ghee, avocado - A glass of water Cook it in olive oil, avocado oil or butter. Salt it with real salt like Celtic sea salt. Done.

What almost none of them eat regularly

- Fried takeaway — reused seed oils, every time - Soda and energy drinks — sugar spikes, crash, poor sleep - Packaged "protein" snacks that are candy bars with a claim on the front - Deli and cured meat as a daily staple — nitrites and sodium - Sweetened breakfast cereal — the worst possible start to a training day Notice they are the exact same categories on every list. That is not a coincidence.

Your action items

1. Pick 8 meals you can cook and rotate them. Stop deciding daily. 2. Add protein to breakfast. This one change fixes most afternoon snacking. 3. Throw out the seed oil and replace it with olive oil today. 4. Eat your carbs around training, not at 10pm on the sofa. 5. Carry water everywhere. Boring, decisive.
