No Crap Diet

What Messi Eats Before A Game (And What He Cut Out)

Simple, boring and repeatable — the five foods Messi built his diet around, the four he reportedly cut, and the exact pre-game plate you can copy tonight.

The 10-second version

Messi did not find a magic food. Around 2014 he started working with a nutritionist and removed four things: sugar, refined flour, fried food and processed meat. That is basically the whole story. What replaced them is boring on purpose — water, olive oil, whole grains, fresh fruit, vegetables and lean protein. If you copy one thing, copy the removals. They matter more than anything you add.

The five foods he built around

1. Water. Not sports drinks all day. Water is the base. 2. Olive oil. Real fat for cooking and drizzling — never seed-oil blends. Extra virgin olive oil is the single easiest pro-level swap in your kitchen. 3. Whole grains. Rice, oats, real pasta — energy that releases slowly instead of spiking and crashing. 4. Fresh fruit and vegetables. Every day, in normal amounts. Nothing exotic. 5. Lean protein. Grilled chicken, fish, eggs. Cooked simply. That is a plate any 14-year-old can build. That is the point.

What he reportedly cut

- Sugar. Soda, sweets, sugary cereal. The biggest single change reported. - Refined flour. White bread, pastries, pizza dough as a daily food. - Fried food. Which in practice means food fried in reused seed oils — soybean, canola, "vegetable oil" blends. - Processed meat. Cured, nitrite-heavy, sodium-heavy deli and sausage products. Notice these are not "unhealthy foods" in some vague way. They are the four categories that make you feel heavy, inflamed and slow the next morning.

The pre-game plate you can copy

3–4 hours before kickoff: a normal meal — grilled chicken or fish, rice or pasta, a little olive oil, some vegetables, water. 1–2 hours before: something small and easy — a banana, a piece of fruit, maybe some plain oats. 30 minutes before: water, and nothing heavy. If it is hot, add electrolytes like LMNT rather than a sugar-loaded sports drink. What is missing on purpose: fried food, cheese-heavy meals, energy drinks, anything new. Game day is not the day to try something.

Your action items

Do these this week. That is it. 1. Cut one liquid sugar source. Soda or juice or the sweet coffee. One. 2. Switch your cooking fat to olive oil and stop buying "vegetable oil". 3. Eat your real meal 3 hours before you play, not 45 minutes before. 4. Repeat the same pre-game meal every single time so your stomach knows it. 5. Drink water all day, not just at the field.
